History
The Green Man has a long and interesting history, beginning in the 18th century. We are currently trying to trace the past of the building. So far we know that a landlord was registered here from 1852...
'The Green Man' himself represents much that has been lost in time. He is a pagan fertility figure - the God that dies and is born again.
He stares down from the tops of pillars or bosses in churches. He can be found in Cathedrals or dancing ahead of the May Queen in procession on May Day.
There are four types of 'Green Man'. The 'Foliate' head in which the face becomes leaves. The 'Spewing' head where leaves and foliage emerge from the mouth. The 'Blood Sucker' head where branches and leaves spring from the eyes, ears and mouth and the 'Jack the Green', which is simply a head peering at us from a frame of foliage.
All seem to be partly hidden so we have to search for them and each and every one is different with their own character.
We hope you will enjoy the individual character of our 'Green Man'.
Keep watching for an updated history as we find it!
